How to add a free AI chatbot to your website
Four steps, about ten minutes, no code. The only part that takes judgement is step two — choosing which of your pages the assistant should learn from.
You do not need a developer and you do not need to touch your theme files if your builder has a custom-code field, which nearly all of them do.

Email and a password. No credit card, no trial countdown, and nothing to cancel later if you decide against it.

The crawler fetches the pages it can reach and shows you the list. Tick the ones worth training on — your pricing, shipping, returns and FAQ pages earn their place first.

Train it, then interrogate it
Training takes a couple of minutes. Then ask it ten real questions from your own inbox before you show it to anybody. This is the step people skip and regret.

Six questions to ask of any free plan
Including ours. Free plans differ far more than paid ones do, and the differences are rarely on the pricing page — these are the questions that surface them.
Is it free forever, or free for fourteen days?
A trial is a countdown wearing a free badge. Both are legitimate; only one leaves you with something at the end of the month.
Can you actually embed it on a live domain?
Some free tiers only run inside the vendor’s own preview. If you cannot put it on your real site, you have not tested anything.
Is the AI itself throttled, or just the volume?
Capping conversations is fair. Quietly downgrading the model so the free tier answers badly is a sales tactic, and you will mistake it for the product being poor.
How big is the branding?
A small watermark is the normal trade. A banner that dominates the widget means the free plan is an advert you are hosting.
What happens at the limit?
Ask whether it warns you or simply stops mid-conversation with a visitor. One of those is embarrassing in front of a customer.
Can you export and delete your data?
Transcripts and leads are yours. If getting them out is awkward on the free plan, it will not be easier on a paid one.
Four signs you have outgrown it
None of these are failures. They are all versions of the same thing: the assistant is being used.
You hit 50 conversations before the month ends
The clearest signal there is. It means visitors are using it, which is the outcome you wanted — Hobbyist takes you to 5,000.
You want to answer “where is my order”
That needs an API tool, which needs a paid plan. Retrieval alone cannot answer a question whose truth changes minute to minute.
You need a second assistant
A separate knowledge base for a separate audience — a docs bot and a sales bot, or a second client. Pro includes two.
Seven days is not long enough to review transcripts
If you review conversations weekly rather than daily, a 7-day window means things age out before you read them.

What is a free AI chatbot for a website?
It is a chat widget you add to your own site that answers visitor questions automatically, on a plan that costs nothing. The kind worth having is trained on your own pages, so it answers with your delivery times and your refund policy rather than generic filler. Free plans in this category are normally capped by volume — how many conversations a month — rather than crippled in quality, though it is worth checking which of those you are being offered.
Do I need to know how to code?
No. Creating and training the assistant is done entirely in the dashboard, and installing it is pasting one line into a field your site builder already provides — a footer-script box on WordPress, theme.liquid on Shopify, custom code on Wix, Squarespace or Webflow. If you can add a Google Analytics tag, you can add this.
Is it free forever, or a trial?
Free forever. There is no countdown and no card required. The limits are on volume — one assistant, 50 conversations a month, 5 MB of training — rather than on time.
What counts as a conversation?
A session with a visitor, not an individual message. A visitor who asks four questions in one sitting is one conversation.
What happens if I go over 50?
The assistant keeps replying and shows a soft usage warning rather than going dark mid-conversation. You can upgrade at any point to restore full capacity.
Can I put it on a live commercial site?
Yes. It is not a sandbox — the free plan embeds on a real domain with one script tag, the same as any paid plan. The widget carries a small CustomerBot watermark, which is removed on Pro.
Is 5 MB enough?
For a small business site, comfortably. Content is stored as extracted text rather than as page images or original files, so 5 MB is a great deal of prose. A large documentation site is where you would want the 40 MB on paid plans.
Is the answer quality worse on free?
No. The retrieval pipeline is identical and you can pick from the same model catalogue. The free plan limits how much you can use it, not how well it works.
Which website builders does it work with?
Any site where you can add a line of HTML, which is effectively all of them — WordPress, Shopify, Wix, Squarespace, Webflow, and hand-built React or Next.js apps. Each has its own short guide on this site covering exactly where the tag goes.
Is my content used to train a public model?
No. Crawled pages and transcripts live in your workspace and are used to answer your visitors. This is worth asking of any free plan you are considering — free products sometimes pay for themselves with data, and you should know which kind you are signing up to.
Can I delete everything afterwards?
Yes. Individual sessions, all sessions for an assistant, and the whole account with its data can all be deleted. There is a dedicated account-deletion page for exactly this.
